The Grid is a participant in affiliate programs designed to provide a way for sites to earn fees by linking to retailers, including (but not limited to):
- Amazon Associates (Amazon.com)
- Other smart home retailer affiliate programs as we add them
What this means
When you click a link on The Grid that takes you to a retailer (most often Amazon), and you buy something during that visit, we may receive a small commission. This commission comes from the retailer, not from you. You pay the same price you would if you’d typed the URL in directly.
Why this matters
Affiliate income is one of the ways we keep the Site running and the lights on. It’s also why we can publish in-depth comparisons without charging readers a subscription.
What this does NOT change
We never recommend a product because of the commission. Our editorial principle is simple: if a product isn’t something we’d suggest to a friend, it doesn’t go on the Site, no matter how high the commission rate is.
If we wouldn’t buy it, we don’t link to it.
Display advertising
In addition to affiliate links, the Site shows banner and in-article advertisements through Google AdSense and similar networks. These ads are selected automatically by the ad network based on the content of the page and (where you’ve allowed it) your browsing history. We don’t control which specific ads appear, and we receive a small payment based on impressions and clicks.
